7 Steps to Make Yard Work a Snap

How often do you say to yourself, “next weekend I’ll clean the yard…” and then nothing happens? We’ve all been there. It can be intimidating to start a project that is going to take that kind of time and hard work. But it can be easy when you break it down into smaller steps. Here are 7 steps to make yard work a snap!

Step One – Grab a trash bag

The first thing to do is just grab a trash bag and start tossing. If you have kids or spare hands around the house, this is a great opportunity to pull them outside to help (whether they want to or not!). No matter how much we want to deny it, trash appears no matter how much you try to prevent it. It could be people throwing things out of their passing car windows or animals dragging stuff into your yard, there is almost always trash just floating around. Getting rid of it first will make your yard look better and give you a chance to walk the property to see what else needs to be done. And having a  helper make the work go by faster. Plus, it also never hurts to have a second set of eyes to catch things you might have missed.

Step 2 – Grab the mower

There’s nothing quite like a freshly mowed yard. The lines, the clean look, the smell! Even when the grass hasn’t gotten out of hand, just giving it a trim can make a huge difference. And when you’re cleaning your yard, it’s like the primer you put up before painting.  It is going to make everything you do look a lot better!

Step 3 – The weeds

While you’re mowing, you can use that extra pair of hands to start pulling the unsightly weeds, especially if you have a lot of flower beds. Pulling weeds helps distinguish between the grass and the garden beds. It may be tedious, but it’s definitely worth it. To avoid more work later, throw the weeds into a wheelbarrow as you go so you don’t have to pick them up later.

Step 4- Trimming the hedges

While mowing the grass is obvious, it can be easy to forget the hedges. Shrubs can make a yard really pop, but when they start growing wild and getting to bushy, they can make it look unkempt. Trimming off the excess growth on the bushes will make them look a lot cleaner, and your yard a lot nicer. Be sure to pick up all the longer branches and throw them in that wheelbarrow with all the other trash.

Step 5 – New Plants

You don’t have to just cut back your yard to help it look better. Bringing in some new plants can give your space a new life.  New flowers are always great. Or you can even add a vegetable or herb garden to give yourself a yummy treat and a nice yard.

Step 6 – Get that new bedding

Laying a new load of mulch or pine needles can really pull your flower bed together.  And it makes your house look amazing. It also helps protect your flower bed from weeds, so you don’t have to waste more time fighting those plant pests.
