Attics and garages can be dangerous. Such large, hidden spaces just begging to be filled up with junk. We get a lot of calls from people who slowly let their attics or garages become so full that they were overflowing with stuff that no one had even looked at in decades. Now, they want them clean and empty. Well, it’s a big job, but it can be done!
Where to start?
Probably the hardest part of any project is figuring out where to start. When you climb into your attic or squeeze into your over-packed garage, it can be overwhelming. With so much to go through, it can feel impossible and pointless to even try. But don’t give up! The trick to it is to pick up the first thing you see and just get to work.
Now the question is, “What do I do with it?” For a lot of people, the stuff that’s accumulated represents a lifetime of memories. Sure, you haven’t looked at this stuff in years. Some of it you don’t even remember. But you’ve collected it through the years of raising a family, it’s the possessions left behind by someone who’s passed on, it has some kind of meaning to you. And that’s all important. But there’s also the reality that it takes up a lot of space. Whether you’re just trying to declutter your home, or you’re moving or downsizing, all of that stuff has to go somewhere.
As you start going through each item, ask yourself if it has any value to you. Can you use it? Does it actually make your life better, or is it just taking up space? If you can use it, take it out of storage and put it where you can find it. If not, then it’s time to let go.
Then what?
The second question to ask is, will it mean something to someone else in your family? Maybe you’ve got old toys from when your kids were growing up. Maybe it’s trophies, or the your dad’s old fishing rods. Whether it may have a practical purpose or a sentimental one, think about whether you have other family members who may want to keep something. If so, give them a call and have them come take it. But make sure they know you can’t keep holding onto it for them. You’ve got to clean out your space. Pass these items on to others who can care for them and get use out of them.
What you have left after finding what you can use and giving your family what they want is the stuff you need to just get rid of. It’s time to start thinking about money. Some of what you have left may have value to it. This might be a great time to have a garage sale. Let other people come in and pay you to take it off your hands. Or, you can list items online and either have people come pick them up or you can mail them off. Either way, this can be a great opportunity to put some extra money in your savings account for later on.
What about the junk?
