Tips for Decluttering Your Home
It’s amazing how the things we want and love can turn into stuff we never use. Slowly our homes fill up with the forgotten gifts and purchases of years gone by. Then, one day, we look around and realize we’re surrounded by things we don’t use or want. That’s when it’s time to start decluttering your home.
But that’s easier said than done. If you’ve let the clutter grow too much, the whole process can be overwhelming. Luckily, there are some tricks you can use to make the job less stressful.
Save time decluttering
While you may be tempted to spend to just jump in and spend the day cleaning, there are better ways to start decluttering. One of the best spreads the job out over time. That way, you’ll slowly identify what you don’t want anymore without having to take a whole day going through everything.
The trick is all in the closet. Start the month out by turning all your clothes hangers so that your clothes are all hanging the same way. Then, as you go about your month, wearing what you want and doing your laundry, you can put the clothes you wear back in the closet. But now, hang them so they face the other way. At the end of the month, you’ll be able to see what clothes you still actually wear, and which ones went untouched. Then, you just grab the ones you didn’t use and toss them! And, it doesn’t just work for clothes – you can use it for shoes, pots and pans, just about anything! Just find a way to turn the items you use so you can easily see them at the end of the month. Don’t take time trying to decide what to keep – let the decluttering happen naturally and save yourself time!
Another popular way to decide what to keep and what to throw away is to see what items bring you joy. As you go through the stuff in your house, take a moment with each and ask yourself if it sparks joy. If it doesn’t, you don’t need it. Just lay it aside in a box or a room for the things you want to get rid of. If you keep this process going whenever you clean or straighten, you’ll never have things that don’t mean anything to you cluttering your house again.
How to get rid of the clutter
Once you know what you actually use and what sparks joy, you’ll have one final step – getting rid of everything else! This part can be stressful. What do you do with it all??
You can regift some of it. The rest you can donate, recycle, or dump. You’ll have to create piles and go through everything to decide what’s in good enough condition to be pass on to someone else, what can be taken to a recycling center, and what just has to go to the landfill. That process can take quite a bit of time.
